Sometime you download a VMWare image which is .ova. Most of the times this is for a workstation.
You can use vmware tools to convert it to a .ovf, but there is an easy way:
Rename the .ova file to .tar. Extract the files and now you see a .ovf file which you can import in VMWare vCenter.
